SMART Objectives for the Odyssey Program Evaluation are statements that clearly define success for Odyssey. The acronym SMART was used to help develop objectives that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. These objectives were developed in collaboration with Odyssey’s Directors. Summer 2008 was the first and baseline year for these measures; Summer 2009 was the second year of the program evaluation.
Academic- Reading:
(1) Elementary: 80% of Odyssey Elementary students will improve by at least half a grade level in reading during the six week program.
(2) Odyssey: By the end of the Odyssey program, 70% of Odyssey students will read a minimum of 2 grade level appropriate books and an assortment of supplementary readings as measured by reading logs.
In 2009: 89% of the Odyssey students read a minimum of 2 books
In 2008: 80.16% of the Odyssey students read a minimum of 2 books.
Academic- Writing:
(3) By the end of the six week program, 80% of Odyssey students will create cross discipline writing examples demonstrating improvement as measured by a rubric aligned to the Georgia Performance Standards.
Academic- Mathematics:
(4) Elementary: By the end of the six week program, 80% of Odyssey Elementary students will demonstrate improvement as measured by gain scores on pre and post tests aligned to the GPS.
In 2009: 89% of Odyssey Elementary students demonstrated mathematics improvement.
In 2008: 69.64% of Odyssey Elementary students demonstrated mathematics improvement.
(5) By the end of the six week program, 80% of Odyssey Elementary students will perform on grade level as measured by scores on the post test aligned to the GPS.
(6) Middle and High School Projects/Presentations: By the end of the Odyssey summer program, 70% of middle and high school students will meet expectations for the application of mathematics skills through presentations and projects as measured by a rubric aligned with Odyssey and GPS standards.
In 2009: 69% of Odyssey Middle School and Odysssey High students met or exceeded mathematics standards.
In 2008: 61.83% of Odyssey High students met or exceeded mathematics standards. (Note: 2008 data was provided for high school students only.)
Academic- SAT:
(7) By the end of the five week program, 70% of Odyssey High students will demonstrate improvement as measured by gain scores on a pre and post SAT sample test.
High School Graduation:
(8) 90% of Odyssey graduates (rising 12th graders) will graduate from high school in 4 years.
Student Learning Profile: (new in Summer 2009)
(9) 100% of Odyssey students will have a student learning profile, completed by the teacher, based on student demonstration of 21st Century learning skills. (Note: only elementary level for Summer 2009)
In 2009: 100% of Odyssey Elementary students had a student learning profile completed by the teacher.
Student Attendance: (revised for Summer 2009)
(10) 90% of Odyssey students enrolled at the beginning of Odyssey will remain in the Odyssey program for the entire summer.
In 2009: 96.6% of Odyssey students enrolled at the beginning of Odyssey remained in the Odyssey program for the entire summer.
Student Retention:
(11) 60% of Odyssey students who meet admissions criteria will return for the following summer.
In 2009: 80% of the eligible 4th – 12th graders were returning students. In 2008: 64% of the eligible 4th – 12th graders were returning students.
